Madison Square Garden sits directly above Pennsylvania Station in Midtown Manhattan, on the site of the original station that was demolished to build it, and has been home to the Knicks and Rangers since it opened in February 1968. The building is essentially circular, with a roof suspended on steel cables from a perimeter compression ring, and the arena floor sits several stories above street level - you ride escalators up from the Seventh Avenue entrance rather than walking in at court level. Seating runs from the lower bowl through suite and club levels to the upper bowl, and a renovation completed in 2013 added the bridge-level walkways suspended over the seating bowl. Because the Garden is built on top of Penn Station, it is one of the easiest arenas in the country to reach without a car: Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit, Amtrak and several subway lines all arrive underneath it.
