Little Caesars Arena opened in September 2017 on Woodward Avenue as the centerpiece of The District Detroit, and is shared by the Pistons and the Red Wings. Architects HOK sank the seating bowl below street level and wrapped the surrounding concourse in a glass-roofed via - a covered public street lined with shops and restaurants that stays open on days with no event. Because the bowl is sunk, most entrances put you on an upper concourse and you walk down toward the lower seats rather than climbing up from the floor, which is the opposite of what people expect at an arena of this size. Seating runs from the lower bowl through club and suite levels to the upper bowl, and the building is configured differently for basketball and hockey, so the same section can sit at a noticeably different distance depending on the event.
